House and Senate democrats have picked former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams to deliver the democratic response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address Tuesday.
Abrams received national attention in last year’s campaign against Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and her strong stance on voting rights have fast made her a standard-bearer for democrats nationwide.
Democratic Party of Georgia Chairwoman Nikema Williams says the move shows how focused democrats are on a traditionally red state.
“As a brilliant leader in our party and a fighter for all Georgians, Stacey Abrams is a phenomenal choice to deliver the Democratic response to the State of the Union. Our state is a critical battleground for Democrats to win in 2020, and this news reflects once again that national leaders have their eye on Georgia,” she said.
The State of the Union Address is Tuesday, Feb. 5.
