Georgia school bus driver who was arrested for DUI fired by school system

A Georgia bus driver who was arrested in Columbia county and charged with Driving Under The Influence and having an Open Container in the passenger area has been relieved of her duties, according to Columbia County School officials.

According to the arrest report, The Columbia County Sheriff’s Dept. arrested 33-year-old bus driver Jessica Avrett Thursday just after 4 p.m. Averett is a bus driver for Columbia County Schools.

Columbia County School Superintendent Dr. Sandra Carraway confirmed the incident occurred and said the bus driver is no longer employed with the school system.

“Unfortunately, an incident did occur October 1 between bus routes that resulted in this driver being charged and, subsequently, relieved of her duties,” Carraway said. “We are thankful that no one was harmed by this driver’s actions.”

Avrett was found asleep in the bus lane of Baker Place Elementary School according to reports from WJBF.

The station reports that Avrett bonded out for about $2,000.
