Early morning shooting in Gwinnett ruled self-defense

DACULA — Police in Gwinnett County have ruled an early morning shooting that took the life of a 27-year-old woman an act of self-defense.

The initial report: The Gwinnett County Police Department was called just after 3 a.m. Wednesday morning in reference to gunshots at a residence off the roadway.

When officers arrived, they found a 27-year-old Azahni Ellis in a vehicle across from a residence suffering from at least one gunshot wound. She died at the scene.

What happened: Homicide Investigators have identified the homeowner as the shooter. 

According to police, The homeowner invited Ellis over to the house earlier in the evening. At some point, Ellis attempted to rob the homeowner and shot at him as he attempted to flee the residence. 

Police say Ellis left the residence and returned moments later. She then attempted to forcefully enter the residence again by breaking a window next to the front door.  The homeowner shot Ellis as she was coming through the front door. 

The homeowner was not charged and the shooting has been determined to be committed in self-defense.
