Two pedestrian deaths in two separate incidents were reported within hours of each other in Bibb County.

The first incident occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Bibb County Sheriff’s Office deputies answered a call of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in the 1100 Block of Gray Highway near Dairy Queen, just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

According to officials, it was reported that a 1995 Buick Roadmaster driven by 28-year-old Eddie Hawkins was traveling northbound on Gray Highway when he struck a man who was walking from the center turning lane.

The man, later identified as 62-year-old Walter Barnes Jr., was transported by ambulance to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The accident is currently being investigated and no charges have been made.

The second incident occurred at about midnight.

Bibb County Sheriff’s Office deputies answered a call of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on Interstate 16 near the Spring street on-ramp, just after midnight Wednesday.

According to the sheriff’s office, it was reported that a 2005 Nissan Altima, driven by 60-year-old Wanda Pearson, of Macon, was traveling westbound on Interstate 16.

Officers say Pearson did not see a man who was walking in her lane of travel on the interstate and struck him. Pearson was transported to the Navicent Health Center to receive treatment for injuries she received during the accident. She is listed in stable condition.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead on scene by the Coroner’s Office. The name of the pedestrian will be released once next of kin is notified. The accident is currently being investigated and no charges have been made at this time.
