Suspects arrested in string of church van thefts throughout Georgia

The Twiggs County Sheriff’s office has arrested two men suspected of stealing several church vans in 11 counties throughout middle Georgia.

The Twiggs County Sheriff’s department became aware of the van theft operation after receiving a call from the pastor of Stone Creek baptist Church. The pastor reported that the church’s white Chevrolet van had been taken and that the lettering on a second church van had been removed in an attempt to steal it as well.

The Sheriff’s Dept. investigation revealed that the church van theft was not an isolated incident, but that vans in ten other counties had also been stolen in multiple counties.

Two men from Columbus were arrested and charged in connection with the van thefts. First, law enforcement arrested Christopher Lamar Cody and upon later evidence arrested Jerome Henderson Ketterer. Both are being held in the Twiggs County Jail.

Law enforcement officials believe the duo stole vans from churches in Twiggs, Bleckley, Houston, Bibb, Jones, Baldwin, Monroe, Ben Hill, and Laurens Counties as well as the cities of Swainsboro and Dublin. All of the counties involved have charged both suspects.

The vans were being stripped of the motors, transmissions, rims and tires, as well as other parts, which were sold. Once the vans were stripped of their parts, the shells were left in other locations.
