MACON — The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in Sunday’s slaying of a pregnant mother in Macon.

Deputies were dispatched to a home on Radio Drive just before 6:39 a.m. Sunday. When deputies arrived on scene they found a female victim in bed suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. The victim, later identified as 36-year-old Melanie Powers, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the coroner’s report, Powers was pregnant at the time of her death and the baby did not survive.

According to the sheriff’s department, Powers’ 11-year-old son ran from the home to get help after he was awakened by his step-sister assaulting him and his mother.

After following up on leads, investigators located 19-year-old Passion Latrice Watkins on Pansy Avenue, sitting inside of a park. Watkins was taken into custody and transported to investigations to be interviewed. After being interviewed Watkins was transported to the Bibb County law enforcement center and charged with malice murder, aggravated assault, cruelty to children and feticide.

The 11-year-old was transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. He was later released from the hospital into the custody of family members.
