Sheriff's deputy fatally shoots 67-year-old Adel man

ADEL — A 67-year-old Adele man is dead after exchanging gunfire with a deputy who responded to a shots fired report at the man’s house Friday.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, preliminary information indicates that at just before 10 p.m. Friday, April 24, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a home on Boone Road in Adel, regarding a report of shots fired.

The first responding deputy made contact with Roy Joiner. GBI officials say Joiner had a gun and exchanged gunfire with the deputy which resulted Joiner’s death.

Deputies had responded to this residence earlier in the evening to a report of Joiner threating people with a knife. A search for Joiner was conducted and arrest warrants were being prepared when the second call was received.

No officers were injured during this incident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation. When completed, the case will be turned over to the Alapaha Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
