Just one week after endorsing Donald Trump for president and being heavily criticized by his own party, Vernon Jones has resigned from office.
The resignation is effective immediately and Jones will not be completing his term, which expires in January. Jones is the District 91 state representative, covering parts of DeKalb and Rockdale counties.
But, in typical Vernon Jones fashion, the announcement came with a controversial parting shot. “Turn the lights off, I have left the plantation. Someone else can occupy that suite,” Jones said in a statement released this morning.
Last week, Jones drew the ire of democrats when he endorsed Donald Trump’s reelection campaign stating that he believes Trump has handled the economy well and has supported black colleges and criminal justice initiatives.
In his resignation statement, Jones said he is “sick and tired of me and my family being attacked and harassed by the Democrat party for putting my country before my party.”
The former CEO of DeKalb County also indicated he was not leaving the democrat party, but would instead help it get rid of its “bigotry against Black people that are independent and conservative.
Jones said he will remain “woke and vigilant in educating and fighting for my people.”
