TYBEE ISLAND — As part of its measures to flatten the curve, the city of Tybee Island closed its beaches along with several other coastal cities. When Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp put a statewide shelter in place order into effect last week, he re-opened those beaches as part of that action.

The Mayor of Tybee Island, Shirley Sessions, says the contradictory orders have created a stressful situation for residents, local elected officials and city staff members.

Sessions posted a video on Facebook to “set the record straight” about the closures and to reassure residents that it was not the city that made the decision to re-open the beaches, but the state. You can watch the video in its entirety above.

Sessions said she has pleaded with the governor’s office to either close the beaches or send help enforcing visitors to the beaches who are not practicing social distancing.
