Atlanta police officers shot a woman they say came towards them with a knife Monday morning.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, preliminary information indicates that at about 9:19 a.m., a 911 call was placed regarding a subject stabbing herself with a knife in the area of Eleanor Terrace in Atlanta. When officers responded, they encountered a 52-year-old woman armed with a knife.

Officers say the woman did not comply with verbal commands to drop the knife and officers then tased her.

Despite these efforts, officers say the woman did not comply and retreated into a neighboring residence and exited carrying another knife.

According to the GBI, the woman quickly advanced towards officers and at that time, an officer shot the woman. She was transported to a local area hospital and is being treated for her injuries. The officers were not injured.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation and upon completion, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
