Glynn County Police Chief John Powell has been indicted by a grand jury and a interim chief has been named who will serve until the allegations against Powell are resolved in the courts.
On Feb. 28, a Glynn County grand jury issued a bill of indictment against Powell on four oath of office violation charges, two influencing a witness charges, and one criminal intent to commit a felony charge. He has been suspended with pay.
“This is an unfortunate situation, but we feel confident that the facts will come to light during this process. The Glynn County Police Department will continue to operate and keep the community safe,” Glynn County Manager Alan Ours said. “We will work diligently to restore public confidence in the department by continuing the work that Chief Powell has done to rectify issues identified by the International Association of Chiefs Police management audit we received in September of 2018.”
Ours has named current Director of Glynn County Emergency Management/ Homeland Security Agency, Jay Wiggins as Interim Chief of Glynn County Police.
According to a statement released by Glynn County, Wiggins was selected to serve as Interim Chief based on his experience at every level of the Glynn County Police Department beginning as a uniformed patrol officer in 1993 and rising to the level of Captain before transitioning to the Emergency Management Agency in 2008.
