Sheriff's Department says Bibb County inmate hanged himself

MACON — A Bibb County inmate has died and Sheriff’s Dept. officials say he appears to have hanged himself.

Bibb County Sheriff Office Investigators are investigating the death of an inmate in the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center. Just after 2 p.m. Thursday, corrections deputies found a Bibb jail inmate unresponsive in his cell.

Sheriff’s officials say conditions in the cell indicate that the inmate hanged himself.

Life saving measures were provided until the inmate was transported to the Navicent Health Center hospital by ambulance. The inmate was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

An autopsy will be performed due to this being an in custody death.

The incident is being investigated by Internal Affairs Investigators from the Bibb Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards. The inmate’s name and offense information will be released as soon as relatives are located and notified.
