Drivers Beware: A 'mega load' truck will be making its way through Georgia the next two nights

A “mega load” truck will be traveling from the Seanous Terminal at the Port of Savannah through much of the State of Georgia Wednesday, Jan. 22 and Thursday, Jan. 23.

The truck’s route will involve interstates in Twiggs, Bibb and Monroe Counties in the Wednesday night shift, and Monroe, Lamar, Spalding, Butts, Henry, Fayette, Coweta and Troup Counties in the Thursday night shift.

The extremely large vehicle and its load will be driving slowly and take up the entire width of a single lane of traffic throughout its route. The truck has 19 axles, is 18 feet ten inches wide and 14 feet four inches tall, and 239 feet long. The gross weight of the vehicle and its load is 558,600 pounds. The load is a shipment of industrial press equipment.

Motorists who encounter the “Mega Load” truck are urged to be alert to the situation, slow their speeds and be careful in passing it. Two Georgia State Patrol officers with blue lights flashing will accompany the truck to pace traffic when needed.

The “mega load” truck’s route starts tonight at 8:00 p.m. at the Seanous Terminal at the Port of Savannah. It should reach Twiggs County on Interstate 16 around 1:00 a.m. It will arrive at the Macon-Bibb County area around 2:15 a.m., utilizing Spring Street, Georgia Avenue and Zebulon Road before getting onto Interstate 475 at around 3:00 a.m. and then Interstate 75 northbound, stopping for the night at the Forsyth Scales at around 3:30 a.m.

Tomorrow night, the truck will leave the Forsyth Scales at 9:00 p.m. and travel on Interstate 75 northbound, reaching the Bill Gardner Parkway interchange at around 9:40 p.m. It will stay on Interstate 75 northbound, utilizing exit off- and on-ramps when bridge lanes are too narrow, until it reaches Interstate 285 westbound in Clayton County at around 10:50 p.m.

The truck will take the bypass to Interstate 85 southbound, reaching that interchange at around 11:00 p.m., and then will take Interstate 85 southbound all the way to the Alabama state line, arriving at that point at around 1:30 a.m.
