Arrests made in assault of 74-year-old Georgia woman

DECATUR — Two additional suspects have been arrested in a highly publicized assault of a 74-year-old woman at a Decatur gas station.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit, working with U.S. Marshals and Atlanta Police Department, has arrested two additional suspects wanted in connection with a Dec. 5 assault on 74-year-old Rosa Smith at a gas station on Gresham Road in Decatur.

Sheriff’s deputies this morning arrested 20-year old Atlanta resident Joshua Bryant and 19 year-old Statesboro resident Tiffany Swanson on Cedar Avenue in Atlanta.

Bryant and Swanson are both charged with Aggravated Battery, Robbery by Force, and Elder Abuse. An initial suspect, 17 year-old Atlanta resident Aaron Johnson surrendered to police and has been in custody at the DeKalb County Jail since Dec. 11 on Robbery and Elder Abuse charges.

The incident prompted authorities to seek public assistance for the two additional suspects once they were identified.

According to warrants, Smith was injured during the incident, in which the suspects allegedly stole her car as she attempted to use the station’s vacuum.

Both suspects were taken into custody without incident and transported to the DeKalb County Jail.
