Shots fired at Cumberland Mall during peak holiday shopping time

COBB COUNTY — Shots were fired at Cumberland Mall Saturday afternoon, according to the Cobb County Police Department.

While the shots did cause shoppers to run through the food court and away from the gunfire, police say early evidence indicates the parties involved in the shooting knew each other and the incident was isolated to those parties.

The department posted on its Twitter account that this was not an active shooter situation, meaning the incident was not random.

According to a statement released by the Cobb County Police Dept., police responded to the scene at 1:18 p.m. The dispute ocurred in the mall’s food court and resulted in one person being shot and the suspect fleeing.

“The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment. A suspect has been identified and we are working to locate him,” the department said in a statement released on Twitter.

Cumberland Mall is temporarily closed and is expected to reopen later this afternoon.
