ATLANTA — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency for Fulton County today due to a “catastrophic failure” of Grady Memorial Hospital’s piping system.
On Saturday, a pipe burst, spilling thousands of gallons of water on multiple floors of the hospital, damaging portions of the hospital’s electrical system beyond repair.
Since the pipe burst, the hospital has been diverting ambulance driven patience to other hospitals, which has now increased patient load to other hospital systems bringing them to capacity.
The state of emergency declaration allows the state to divert resources and funding immediately to control the situation.
The order went into effect Dec. 13 and ends in 30 days, on Jan. 12.
