CARROLLTON — The GBI is investigating the death of an inmate in the Carroll County Jail last week.

On Nov. 18, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the death of 28-year-old Marquis Hayslett.

According to the GBI, preliminary information indicates that on Nov. 15, at about 10:30 p.m., the Villa Rica Police Department arrested Hayslett and charged him with one count of simple assault and one count of family violence stemming from an incident involving his girlfriend. Hayslett was transported to the Carroll County Jail.

At some point during his incarceration, Hayslett reportedly required medical attention for an illness and was placed in the medical holding unit of the jail.

On Nov. 18, at about 6:38 a.m., Hayslett was found unresponsive in his cell. Emergency medical services were called to attend to Hayslett who was reportedly already deceased.

A GBI autopsy of Hayslett is pending. The GBI will continue its independent investigation.  Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be provided to the Coweta County District Attorney’s Office for review.
