GBI: North Carolina man who attacked Athens police officers with machete identified

ATHENS — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified the North Carolina man who was shot by police after threatening officers with a machete.

According to the GBI, the man has been identified as 28-year-old Salvador Salazar.

Salazar remains in the hospital in serious condition. An arrest warrant has been issued and turned over to the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office to be served for one count of aggravated assault on a police officer.

According to the GBI, preliminary information indicates that just before 5 p.m. Saturday, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to a domestic incident at University Gardens Apartments located on Baxter Drive in Athens

Officers say when they arrived, they were confronted by Salazar, who was armed with a machete. Police say Salazar ignored commands from the officer to drop the machete and attacked one of the officers. The officer fired at the Salazar, striking him.

No police officers were injured in the incident.
