An award winning pizza restaurant in North Fulton is celebrating 40 years with throwback pricing

ALPHARETTA — A popular North Fulton pizzeria is turning 40 and will mark the occasion with specials, giveaways and other festivities.

On October 7, Mama’s Pizza will celebrate 40 years in business with throwback pricing on cheese pizza and slices. A slice of New York style thin crust cheese pizza will be $1.00 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and large cheese pizzas will be $5.99 each from 4 to 9 p.m., dine-in or carry-out. There will be kids’ activities from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. free cookies with each purchase and giveaways all day.

The pizzeria first opened in North Fulton in 1979 when Pete Vavaroutsos and his family relocated from New York. Vavaroutsos was born in Greece and came to the United States in 1958. He worked with an Italian chef in New York City to learn the pizza business. Vavaroutsos brought his perfected recipes with him when he relocated to Georgia. Today, Jimmy Vavaroutsos, Pete’s son, carries on the family traditions using the same recipes and sourcing the same quality ingredients.

Mama’s Pizza opened its first location at the old Roswell Mall off Holcomb Bridge Road. Over the years there have been several locations, including 10 Years spent at a store front location off Old Milton Parkway in Alpharetta.

Since 2013 Mama’s Pizza has resided at 5950 North Point Parkway in Alpharetta. Even though the address changed through the years, one thing has remained the same — the menu. The restaurants fans have appreciated their food and followed them through each relocation.

Mama’s Pizza has stayed true to it’s roots. Famous for their New York style thin crust pizza and thick Sicilian style pizza, owner Jimmy and his team make their own dough fresh daily.

The pizza and pasta sauce is slow simmered all day and only the best mozzarella cheese and toppings are used. Another fan favorite is the Papou’s salad. Named for the Greek word meaning “grandfather” and a tribute to original owner Pete Vavaroutsos. The Papou salad is Mama’s own take on the Greek salad with lettuce, generously topped with mozzarella, ham, tomatoes, cucumbers, black olives, feta and pepperoncini. The best part is the Vavaroutsos family recipe vinaigrette.

Over the years Mama’s Pizza has received many local awards and recognitions. To name a few: Point’s North Magazine Reader’s Choice 2008 “Best Pizza in the Northside” and 2010 AJC’s Best of the Big A, “Best Pizza.”
