Fire kills elderly Monroe County couple

FORSYTH — An elderly couple died as a result of a house fire Saturday night at about 9:48 p.m.

The Monroe County Fire Department responded to a residential fire located at a home on Strickland Loop in the city of Forsyth. When firefighters made their way inside the home, they found 87-year-old Morris Adair and 91-year-old Virginia Adair deceased on the floor of the master bedroom.

“The residence was heavily damaged by the fire and it appeared to have started in garage of the home,” said Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King. “The structure was three years old and 1,770 square feet at the time of the fire. Right now, the official ruling of this unfortunate event is an accidental fire. The cause is still being investigated.”

Investigators with the Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office are assisting the Monroe County Fire Department and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office with this investigation.

In 2019, Georgia fires have claimed the lives of 50 people.
