GBI: Georgia man who fled on four-wheeler after being served with warrant killed

GLENWOOD — A man is dead after fleeing officers who served him with a warrant and getting into a physical altercation with an officer.

On Thursday, May 2, 2019, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was asked by the Wheeler County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting.

According to the GBI, preliminary information indicates that at about 1:15 p.m., Wheeler County Sheriff’s Office and the Oconee Drug Task Force attempted to serve a bench warrant on Dry Branch Road in Glenwood.

When law enforcement arrived, officers observed the subject with a bench warrant outside the residence. Police say the subject fled on a four-wheeler, and the law enforcement officers gave pursuit. The subject fled into the woods and thereafter, the subject and one of the law enforcement officers were in a physical altercation.

During the incident, the law enforcement officer discharged his service weapon, striking the subject. The subject was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The officer involved sustained minor injuries.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be provided to the Wheeler County District Attorney’s Office for review.
