Filling up? Beware of gas station sliders

LAWRENCEVILLE — Gwinnett County Police are looking for a man they say is behind several robberies at local gas stations.

What is a gas station slider?: Each of the robberies follows the trend of gas station sliding. Sliding happens when a thief takes advantage of a person who is distracted using the gas pump or who has left the gas pump while gas is being pumped. The thief opens the unlocked passenger door and quickly absconds with any valuables that are within reach. These crimes do not take long to commit and are sometimes not immediately detected by victims.

The Story: Gwinnett Police are searching for a subject related to at least three thefts from vehicles. On April 5, two victims had pumped gas at the Quicktrip at 5050 Sugarloaf Parkway. While the victims were away from their vehicle, the thief entered their vehicle and stole their phone, wallets, and other items of value.

A short time later the same type of theft was committed at a RaceTrac at 1800 Beaver Ruin Road.

Detectives believe the same suspect is responsible for this theft as well.

The subject entered the passenger front door of the victim’s vehicle while she was actively pumping gas. When she heard the door close she looked over and the suspect vehicle was quickly leaving.

Police are asking anyone who has details on these incidents to contact detectives at 770-513-5300. To remain anonymous, tipsters can contact Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477) or visit www.stopcrimeATL.com
