Swainsboro house fire claims lives of teenager and 63-year-old

SWAINSBORO — A fire in a Swainsboro home claimed the lives of a 16-year-old and and a 63-year-old early Thursday morning.

Georgia fire investigators say at about 3 a.m. Thursday morning, the Swainsboro Fire Department responded to a residential fire on Claxton Ave. Two adults were able to escape the home, but 63-year-old Irwin Woods of Swainsboro along with a 16-year-old minor were killed in the fire.

“The home was built in 1961 and was around 700 square-feet. The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen. Due to the extensive damage from the blaze, a cause has not been determined and this case remains under investigation,” said Safety Fire Commissioner Jim Beck. “No smoke detectors were found in the home.”

The two adults who escaped the fire were sent to the Doctor’s Hospital of Augusta for smoke inhalation. The bodies of the victims have been sent to the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah for autopsies.

Investigators with the Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office are assisting the Swainsboro Police Department, Swainsboro Fire Department, and the Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office with this investigation.

In 2019, fires have claimed the lives of 21 people in Georgia.
