DeKalb police kill robbery suspect

The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting connected to a robbery at a Family Dollar store in Decatur.

According to the GBI, preliminary information indicates that DeKalb County Police officers responded to an armed robbery call at the Family Dollar at 4787 Covington Highway in Decatur March 5.

A DeKalb County Police officer canvassing the area located an individual, identified as 22-year-old Steven Louis Goins in close proximity to the robbery. According to the GBI, during the attempted arrest, the officer discharged their weapon, striking Goins. 

Goins was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. A gun and a bag of money were located in close proximity to Goins. 

No officers were injured in this incident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
