Investigation continues after Sandtown Middle School students were hospitalized after eating Valentine's Day treats

Fulton County Schools provided an update today on the investigation surrounding students at Sandtown Middle School who fell ill on Valentine’s Day after eating snacks and candy at school.

Here is the status of the investigation so far and the actions being taken by the school system.

  • All 28 students have been released from the hospital.
  • According to the school system, the GBI received samples of the edible items from the school Feb. 19, five days after the students fell ill.
  • Student interviews are still being conducted. Friday, Monday and Tuesday were holidays for the school, but the interviews will resume Wednesday when school starts back again.
  • The school system has vowed to “follow through to the full extent of the law as well as with the most severe consequences allowed under our Student Disciplinary Code of Conduct should the investigation indicate foul play,” according to a news release.
  • The school system is is preparing a campaign that educates students on the dangers of taking or eating foods that come from an unknown source.

According to the police report filed after the incident, students said they ate a heart-shaped lollipop and Rice Krispy treats, but were unable to tell officers who gave them the items.
