The Public Record: Republicans vs. Republicans vs. Democrats

“Because public men and women are amenable ‘at all times’ to the people, they must conduct the public’s business out in the open.”

Charles L. Weltner Sr., former Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court

What is this?: The Public Record is a recurring feature on this website where we present recent quotes by public officials or candidates. You may not be able to attend every public meeting or candidate forum, but you still have a right to know what your representatives and those who hope to represent you have been saying. Quotes for these entries are usually chosen based on bluntness, relevance or humor.

On Democrats and Georgia Values

“By wrapping themselves in the arms of Bernie Sanders and Nancy Pelosi, Stacey Abrams and the Democratic Party have shown their desire to raise taxes and grow government. Those values are as Georgian as drinking a Pepsi at a Mets game.” -Republican State Rep. Trey Kelley

Plenty of time to think

“A grown man should know that it’s wrong to have sex with a child. Now Mr. Brice has a dozen years to think about his actions.” -Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney David Cooke (Here is the context.)

Slinging (and spreading) the mud

“…an acre wide and an inch deep” -Brian Kemp describing Casey Cagle’s support to The Gainesville Times

The 4.98 Percent

This next one takes a little explaining. During the fallout from Roseanne Barr’s tweet last week, Georgia republican operative Seth Weathers sent a tweet indicating that he doesn’t believe Valerie Jarrett is truly an African American. Weathers was the campaign manager for failed gubernatorial candidate Michael Williams, who received 4.98% of the vote in the May 22 primary.

In response to this tweet from Weathers, fellow republican and state rep. John Pezold tweeted the following burn:

“Hey but good luck finding the next schmuck who’s willing to pay you to run their losing campaign. I’m more than 4.89% certain you’ll be perfect for each other.” – Rep. John Pezold
